Sample: There is nowhere a donor like Śankara. He takes pity on the miserable, He is fond of only giving away, and He always likes those who ask (for something).[1] After killing (burning) Māra (Kāmadeva), the foremost among warriors, Śiva established him (again) in the world. How can I describe the act of pity of such a Lord when He is pleased?[2]

Sample: I always take myself to Sarasvatī, Who has four elemental faces, Who roams in the immediate proximity of Mount Śrngātaka, Who is situated in the talks of eminent ones.[1] Salutations for that thread of Vāktattva (speech element), which is infinitesimal, and which is pure — of whose disposition is variegated, and which bestows shape to the cloth of world.[2]

pasupatyastakam

Pashupati Ashtakam by Prithvi Pati Soori at Stutimandal

(Click on the above link for the full poem)

Dhyānam: One should meditate upon Maheśa, Who is eternal, Whose complexion resembles Mount Kailāsa, Who has a beautiful moon on forehead, Whose bright organs are decorated by jewels, Who has an axe, a deer, boon and fearlessness in hands, Who is gracious, Who is sitting on a lotus, Who is continuously eulogized by the devagana (demi-gods), Who has a cloth made of tiger-skin, Who is the beginning of the universe, Who is the cause of the universe, Who absolves all the fears, Who has five heads, and Who has three eyes (on every head).[1]
